NSAG/Friends of Cherokee Marsh exhibit

Exciting news regarding this long-planned exhibit. The NSAG/Cherokee Marsh exhibit will be on display at Warner Park Community Center during October 2008. The Northside Planning Council will be holding its 15th Anniversary Event at the center on the October 10, as well. This is an exciting collaboration among NSAG, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh, the Northside Planning Council (NPC) and Warner Park.

More details on the show will be forthcoming soon.

But here are a few details to start with:

One work of art per artist

The art will reflect Cherokee Marsh

It must be art that can hang on the wall

Certain size limitations will be specified later

Art must be ready to hang

The Friends of Cherokee Marsh will be providing informational text pertaining to the environmental aspects of the marsh and will be available to help identify plants, etc. After the exhibit comes down at Warner Park Community and Recreation Center, it will travel to other venues and those are being looked into.

Beese solo show in July

Northside Artists Group member Bill Beese is having a solo show July 1-July 31, in the Jackie Macaulay Gallery of the Social Justice Center, 1202 Williamson St., with an opening reception on Friday, July 11, from 5-9 pm. Otherwise, gallery hours are Mon.-Fri., 9 am-5 pm.

Opportunities for NSAG artists

Margy and Dick Walker have agreed to coordinate the NASG booth at the Northside Farmers
Market (NFM) this coming season.NSAG has a tent, 2 tables and a banner for use at the market 8:30am to 12:30 pm Sundays from now until the close for summer, October. The NFM management is offering two Sundays per month for our use. You may
exhibit and sell your art, solo or with another member and also demonstrate
art. Demos are most welcome by the NFM. We need to know which of you would like to participate this summer. The dates we have are: May 25,June 8, June 22, July 6, July 20, Aug.3, Aug. 17, Aug. 31, Sept. 7, Sept.21, Oct.5, and Oct. 19.

Please let the Walkers know if you are interested or e-mail NSAG (see email addy to the right of this post).

Also, Katie is always looking for artwork to hang in the library. She was able to get a new hanging system, which is very easy to use. The art show looks great with this new system. If you are interested in sharing your work, please call Katie at the library at 246-4547 to reserve some time. You may also share the space with another artist or two, if you choose.

Also, please give Katie a big thank you for getting the hanging system in place!

Show at Lakeview/Coffee Gallerie comes down today

Please note that this Thursday (May 15) is the final day for the NSAG show. Please make
arrangements to pick up your artwork on Thursday from either location.

You are welcome to pick up your pieces any time on Thursday. The Coffee Gallerie
closes at 6 pm and the library closes at 8. Keep in mind the library may have an
event that evening in the reading or meeting room.

Pieces not picked up will be taken to Dana's office at the Northside News at 2702
International Lane, Suite 203. You may make arrangements to pick them up from Dana at work next Monday or later. Call Dana at 661-0060 -- calling ahead is best so someone is there to assist you.

Spring Reception

Spring NSAG reception is this Saturday, 11 am to 1 pm at Lakeview Public Library and the Coffee Gallerie. Beverages will be provided at the library's back reading room. This is a very informal reception, so drop if you are able to chat with your fellow artists.

Spring show moves to the Northside

The Overture show is down and, with some minor changes, is being remounted as our annual spring show at the Lakeview Public Library and the Coffee Gallerie at Northside Town Center.

We are particularly excited about the library's new hanging system! Thanks to the library for taking the time and making the effort of installing this new system. Tell the folks at the library how great it looks. The reading room looks brand new again.

The Coffee Gallerie part of the show will be hung on Friday, April 11. Announcements will be arriving shortly.

It was a rainy day to hang some art...but we were fortunate there was no snowstorm.

Some dedicated NSAGers helped put the "Reflections of the Northside" show up in the Overture Gallery III this morning. We had plenty of knowledge, the world's cutest level, were scant a few pencils, and definitely needed some better erasers.

"Reflections of the Northside" offers a wide-ranging look at the neighborhood where the artists live, work and play. Many of the thirty-some pieces of art in the show reflect the area’s many wonderful natural areas, depicting Cherokee Marsh, Warner Park, Troy Gardens, the Yahara River, Lake Mendota, Governor’s Island, and Lake View Hill. Other artists have an abstract interpretation of what life on the Northside feels like to them. Media include oils, acrylic, clay, pastels, watercolor, photography, glass mosaic, metal, monotype and mixed media.

The show looks great and we are looking forward to the reception on Sunday, Jan. 27, from noon-2 pm -- hey, there's no football that Sunday! Did they plan that? Yes they did! NSAG thinks of everything! Come and bring your friends.

Northside Farmers' Market Art Presence

Here's a retrospective report from NSAG artist and booth participant Kristi Hall:

My first experience as a vendor at the Northside Farmers Market came on October 21st of this year. It was the last outdoor market of the season but you wouldn't have known it looking around. The sun was shining, warm on our backs, as we talked with our neighboring vendors. Patrons mingled about catching up on the week’s events. And a table full of kids were busy decorating bags for Meals on Wheels with Forrest Espinoza and her son, Sage, for the activity at our Northside Artists Group booth. That is where I spent my Sunday morning; at the Northside Artists Group, or NSAG, booth. It was our organization's first year at the Market but hopefully not the last.

The NSAG booth served two purposes for our members this year. It gave us a fairly regular venue to showcase our artwork and sell some if we were so inclined. But it was also there to educate the community about NSAG. With such a wonderful crowd at the Market that day there were plenty of chances for me to tell people about how NSAG is comprised of artists who live or work on the Northside. I was able to explain that the group promotes the many talents of those Northside artists, creates opportunities for them to exhibit their work and encourages members to network with other artists. For many of the members just being able to share their work with others and having a place to do that is very gratifying.

For me, NSAG has done all of those things and more. In the two years that I have been a member I've showed my photography in exhibits, worked on community projects and joined other photography organizations. The people I talked to at the Market, those who admitted to having no artistic talents as well as fellow artists, were excited to hear about NSAG and thought it was great that we had a group like NSAG right here on the Northside. I hope I was able to recruit more members because of the exposure at the Market. But even if I didn't, I know the Market is a great Sunday morning opportunity for our current members that is sure to continue and grow.

The Northside Artists Group has been accepted to exhibit at the Overture Center for the Arts. The show will be on exhibit in Gallery III from January 10 through March 23, 2008.
Exhibit Theme
Our theme for the show is "Reflections of the Northside". The goal of the exhibit is to enable the greater community to explore and learn about Madison’s Northside through visual art. Your artwork should portray some element of the Northside within your preferred artistic medium.
Application and Artwork Submission
Applications for the submitting artwork for the show will be mailed / emailed on Friday, November 9th. The application deadline is Monday December 3rd.
You may submit one piece to exhibit. The gallery can accommodate wall-mounted artwork only. If your piece is 3-demensional, you may provide a shelf for display. No artwork or shelving may project more than 12 inches from the wall. Please prepare your artwork with wire and/or appropriate hardware.
Sales
You may offer your artwork for sale during the exhibit. The Overture Center and NSAG do not receive any money from sales of artwork. Artwork must remain hung until the end of the show. You will receive more information about artwork sales with the application.
Liability and Insurance Information
The Overture Center and Northside Artists Group cannot offer any insurance for your artwork. We will handle your pieces as carefully as possible. In addition, the Overture Center galleries are equipped with security cameras.
Volunteer to help

NSAG at the Overture

Exciting News! NSAG has been selected to exhibit at the Oveture in 2008. Our exhibit will hang January-March 2008 in Gallery III.

Details right now are a bit vague. The Oveture will host a meeting in August to provide more information, and NSAG will hold a meeting in early September.

January is closer than you think, so you can begin creating now!

Our theme for the exhibit is "Reflections of the Northside". In brief, your artwork should portray some element of you define the Northside or what you find valuable about the Northside within your preferred artistic medium.

I proposed the exhibit as follows in our application:
"The exhibit will enable the greater community to explore and to learn about Madison’s Northside through visual art. The Northside is an extremely environmentally, culturally and socioeconomically diverse community. It is home to Cherokee Marsh, Warner Park, the Governor’s Mansion, Mallards baseball, Troy Gardens, Dane County Regional Airport, the Vera Court, Kennedy Heights, Northport and Packers community centers and more. Artists have endless opportunities to create art based on their neighborhood while challenging their own artistic explorations."

At this point, every artist will be able to exhibit one piece within a limited size range. There will be a fee of some sort (roughly $30) to partake in this show to cover exhibit costs. If the fee is a challenge for you, please talk to me (Dana) or another NSAG coordinator.

Of course, we will need help coordinating the show. There are countless ways to get involved. If you have an interest in mind, please let me know. Sign up sheets will also be available at the September meeting.

Dana and I have worked hard to get this space for all of you! We have a tent, two tables, NSAG brochures and a NSAG banner. All you have to do is pick a date and be their to share your art with the Northside community. You are welcome to share the space with other artists. So call a few people in the group, it's more fun with other people anyway. The Northside Farmer's Market would like us to have an art activity table on the third weekend of every month. This is a great chance for you to show people your skills with a hands on demonstration. Please call or email me and we can talk about the details!

NSAG Meeting Minutes 5/16/07 @ Lakeview Library

Topic #1 Northside Farmers Market (NSFM)

Forrest went over what was said at the NSFM meeting
Set up is by 8:30am and breakdown is by 12:30
NSFM is giving us a stall for free this year. In return NSFM would like us to be the filter for any art based group or individual that wants a stall
We have our stall every 1^st and 3^rd Sunday from May 20^th thru Oct 21^st. NSFM suggested doing an art based activity on the 3^rd Sunday since they don’t have anything planned on those Sundays. Perhaps during the peak busy times of 10-12.
There was a lot of discussion about the activities and/or demos.

Can we get enough members interested to do them for 5 Sundays?
Who will coordinate them?
Who would supply and pay for the materials?
Do we have enough time to get this organized?

Forrest offered to supply some materials and ideas/kits for projects but cannot be at the NSFM every Sunday there is an activity.
Those present at the meeting (as well as the NSFM) thought it would be acceptable to ask for donations from anyone participating in the activity.
ACTION FORREST: Forrest will contact the NSAG members and see who is interested in either showing/selling their art and what dates they could do that and/or conducting an activity/demo while they are showing/selling their art.
Be aware that we cannot compete with other NSFM vendors. Items such as candles, jams, and other homemade products are not allowed for NSAG members. See the NSFM’s webpage for a list of their current vendors.
ACTION DANA: Dana is checking on purchasing tables and a tent for use at the NSFM. If you have any info to share regarding places to buy these things let her know. 241-3669. UPDATE: The tables and tent were purchased. We now have a tent and two six-foot tables
We discussed that a portion (perhaps 5 to 10%) of any sales at the NSFM from NSAG members would go back to NSAG. Nothing was officially decided upon. ACTION DANA: place on the agenda for the next meeting and/or send out a ballot to NSAG members.
The idea was brought up by Dana that the NSAG tent could be rented out to NSAG members for a fee and that money be income for NSAG. Those at the meeting liked that idea.
NSFM will take care of advertising when NSAG will be at the market. We need to let them know if we will not have anyone there.

What should we have at our booth on a weekly basis?

We have postcards left for this purpose. Kristi and Dana have extras. Please get some if you intend to be at the NSFM.
Do we need a banner? Who can work on that?
ACTION DANA: Dana will work on a brochure for the booth.

ACTION CAROLYN: Carolyn will talk to some people that might be able to loan us some stands that you hang artwork on.

Topic #2 Cherokee Marsh

Carolyn Gantner offered to be the Coordinator for this project and subcommittee
Let her know if you are interested in helping/participating
The project idea: collaborate with the Friends of Cherokee Marsh (Jan Axelman) and put on an art show that highlights the marsh and it’s contents. Why it’s important, why we need to keep it around etc.
Friends of Cherokee Marsh are willing to help us with any text, plant and animal ID that we need so that we can have info to go along with our artwork.
We are hoping for a show in 2008, location TBD.
ACTION ALL: Should we have a more precise theme? If you have ideas, send them to Carolyn.
We discussed making this the Overture center exhibit but decided against it. If we do it separate, we’ll increase our exposure and coordinating the time might get a bit tricky.

Topic #3 Overture Center

ACTION DANA: Working on the application that is due in Mid June
Show would be for 2008. The overture would pick Spring or Fall and let us know.
